Equine Assisted Therapy & Learning

Sometimes the greatest conversations happen without words.

There is something incredibly special about spending time with horses.

They have an extraordinary ability to live completely in the present moment. They don't judge us by our past, worry about our future or expect us to be anything other than who we are.

Instead, they respond honestly and authentically to what is happening in the here and now.

For many people, this creates an opportunity to slow down, breathe and reconnect with themselves in a way that can be difficult to achieve elsewhere.

At Cotswolds Equine Assisted Therapy & Learning, we combine the therapeutic relationship with the unique qualities of horses to create a calm, supportive environment where reflection, growth and healing can take place.

What is Equine Assisted Therapy?

Equine Assisted Therapy & Learning is a gentle, ground-based approach that combines psychological understanding with carefully facilitated interactions alongside horses.

There is no riding involved.

Instead, sessions take place on the ground and are tailored to your individual needs.

Sometimes we may simply spend quiet time observing the horses.

Sometimes we may walk alongside them, groom them or take part in simple activities that encourage reflection, communication and self-awareness.

There is never any expectation to "perform" or to know anything about horses beforehand.

Our focus is always on you.

The horses simply become part of the therapeutic process.

Why Horses?

Horses are incredibly sensitive animals.

As prey animals, they are constantly aware of their environment and communicate honestly through their body language. They notice tension, relaxation, confidence, uncertainty and changes in energy without judgement.

Because of this, they often help us become more aware of ourselves.

Not because they are trying to "fix" us.

But because they invite us to slow down, notice and connect.

I've often found that people discover things alongside the horses that would have been difficult to express through words alone.

Sometimes the most powerful moments come in silence.

What Happens During a Session?

Every session is different because every person is different.

We begin by talking about what has brought you here and what feels important for you.

From there, we work together alongside the horses in a way that feels safe and comfortable.

There is no pressure to do anything that doesn't feel right.

Some sessions involve conversation.

Some involve quiet observation.

Some include simple activities with the horses.

Often it's a combination of all three.

As with counselling, the pace is always guided by your needs.

Meet Our Herd

Each of our horses has their own personality, preferences and way of interacting with the world.

They are not tools or equipment.

They are valued partners in our work.

Their wellbeing always comes first, and every interaction is based on kindness, trust and respect.

Watching people and horses develop relationships built on mutual understanding is one of the greatest privileges of this work.

My Philosophy

Working alongside horses has strengthened something I have always believed:

Behaviour always has meaning.

Whether we're talking about people or horses, behaviour is communication.

Rather than asking, "How do we stop this behaviour?" I believe a more helpful question is, "What is this behaviour trying to tell us?"

When we approach ourselves—and the horses—with curiosity instead of judgement, we create the conditions for understanding, trust and lasting change.

This philosophy sits at the heart of everything I do.

Your First Visit

If you're feeling a little nervous, that's completely normal.

Many people arrive wondering whether they'll "do it right" or whether they know enough about horses.

The answer is simple—you don't need any experience at all.

We'll take things one step at a time.

Our first session is simply an opportunity to meet, explore the environment, spend time with the horses if you wish and begin to build a relationship.

There is no pressure.

No expectations.

Just a warm welcome, a peaceful setting and the opportunity to discover whether this way of working feels right for you.

An Invitation

Whether you're looking for a different way of exploring life's challenges, hoping to reconnect with yourself or simply curious about the therapeutic role horses can play, I'd love to welcome you.

Together, we'll create a space where understanding comes before judgement, connection comes before solutions, and both people and horses are respected for who they are.

Sometimes healing begins with a conversation.

Sometimes it begins with standing quietly beside a horse.

Either way, you don't have to take that first step alone.
